What’s in it for me?
These are “LPM style” workshops on topics of practical interest to persons leading music in an intensive, one-day workshop setting at your church. Workshops cover a lot of material in a short time.

Who leads the workshops?
LPM Board members and other church music leaders who have taught LPM courses and/or dealt with smaller church situations. The length of the workshops varies depending upon the situation and local needs.

Are there fees involved?
Reasonable fees are involved. When you contact us, we can offer help putting together your workshop, suggest a fee structure that covers expenses, and offer ways to publicize your event.

Who should come?
Anyone interested in music and liturgy in the church — musicians, pastors, worship leaders, choir members — should come no matter what church they attend. Plan a lunch time for fellowship and conversation. It’s a great time to meet other church musicians and learn from each other.

Workshop Offerings

New workshop titles will be added to the list regularly.

Choral Leadership/Music for Small Choirs: A “hands on” class dealing with rehearsal techniques plus a reading session with instruction on good anthems for limited resources.

Composing your own psalm settings and antiphons: This workshop helps you compose your own simple psalm settings and antiphons.  It provides an inexpensive resource that always fits your needs.

Contemporary Music: Getting Started: Beginning a contemporary service? It can be overwhelming. This workshop will discuss how to begin, forming and organizing a group, where to find music, and use of technology.

Guitars: Leading Worship: The goal is to equip guitarists who have little formal training in church music to lead congregational song with sensitivity, confidence and joy, and to integrate the students’ experience into a broader base of their skills in congregational leadership using many different types and styles.

Handbells in Worship: Handbells add vibrant color and beauty to our worship through creative and effective introductions and accompaniments. Discover the joy of ringing, and explore handbell techniques (bell peals, random ringing, ostinato patterns, canons, descants, cluster chords), opportunities for use, and benefits for ringers and congregation. This is a “hands on” session, whether or not participants have handbell experience. Resource materials for handbells will be shared.

Instruments in Worship: Learn how to incorporate brass, woodwinds and orchestral strings from beginner to professional into worship. This session will present music that is currently available as well as show you how to create/adapt your own material. General rehearsal/performance tips for instrumentalists will also be shared.

Children and Youth Choirs: When we hear that "children are the future of the church," the response is often, "Children are the church today!" Participate in this interactive worship and you’ll explore practical ideas for engaging children in worship.

Teaching New Music: This workshop addresses the challenges and benefits of learning new music as well as the pastoral and musical skills necessary to be in music ministry. Using many small group strategies and decision making process for a larger group, it can be offered in two ways: shorter (45-60 minutes) or longer (half day).

What is LPM? Using little “teasers” from some of the LPM courses as well as practical suggestions, this is a 90-minute workshop that can be lengthened or shortened as needed.

Information Gathering and Facilitating: Tools for gathering information and facilitating meetings are presented in this workshop (60-90 minutes).

LPM in Your World: Getting Started: LPM Coordinator training (and recertification) is now offered locally. Find out how to begin a local LPM program, teach the courses, find facilities, apply for grants, target faculty and students, set a suitable fee structure, and more.

Getting Ready for Sunday — Organ Practice Techniques: This workshop will give practical ideas for maximizing limited practice time to prepare hymns, preludes/postludes, service music, and accompaniments. Resources will be shared.

Psalm Singing Resources: Are you looking for new ways to enliven the singing of psalms in your worship?  Or do you want to try some new settings of psalms?  This workshop is for you.

Reading Sessions for Choirs with Limited Resources: The reading sessions use music for choirs with limited resources, concentrating on unison, two and three part anthems.

Saving Your Soul and Sanity as a Church Musician: This day-long workshop will deal with issues of Spiritual Formation for church musicians themselves and for the volunteers they lead and direct.

So Now You Are the Church Musician: Practical help for people leading worship & music who weren't trained to do that! This day-long workshop introduces you to planning music for worship, playing hymns and leading the choir, clergy/musician relations, and resources to help you do all of it better.

Taizé Spirituality & Worship: Contemplative worship strives to be one of transcendence through meditation, readings, silence and music. The experience finds its true meaning in the active and/or passive participation of the worshippers. The workshop preceding the service will investigate resources both within and without the Taizé tradition.

Worship Folders: Whether you call it a worship folder, service sheet, bulletin, or whatever, all of us need new ideas to communicate more effectively with our congregations.  Ideas will be shared to make this tool work better for you.

Basic Vocal Production: This is a workshop demonstrating basic training and care of the voice as well as rehearsal techniques for choirs.  Subjects include basic warm-ups and the application of the same to music the choir is preparing to sing.

Other workshop titles will be added.
