UPCOMING ONLINE COURSES

Developing a Philosophy of Church Music - Registration has closed.

Spring 2017: March 22 – June 7 (minus Holy Week; mid-point May 3)

Jennifer Baker-Trinity, instructor       jbakertrinity@me.com

This course is designed to give the participant the opportunity to form and articulate their own responsible and consistent philosophy of church music; and to ponder and discuss the following questions: How does church music “function” in worshipping communities? What are its principles that shape leadership? What are the advantages and challenges to developing such philosophy for practical use? How can I, as a church musician, practice my craft in accordance with principles, being both responsive to context and sensitive to differing values?

Liturgy and Music for Lutherans - Registration has closed.

Spring 2017: March 22 – June 7 (minus Holy Week; mid-point May 3)

Scott Weidler, instructor         sweidler59@gmail.com

Music is integral to the liturgy of the Church, and not simply a decoration. If this is true, then a church musician ought to understand the foundational history and theology of Christian worship. This course will provide a beginning to that exploration, focusing on how music is at the heart of what happens when Christians gather for worship. Although this course is designed especially for Lutheran church musicians, musicians from other traditions, clergy and interested lay people are welcome to participate.

Hymnody of the Christian Church Registration now open!

Summer 2017: June 7 - August 23 (mid-point July 19)

Scott Weidler, instructor         sweidler59@gmail.com

This course is designed to present an overview of the history of Christian hymnody; to give the participant an in-depth opportunity to explore their own hymnal; and to ponder and discuss the following "real-time" questions: What does hymnody currently look like? How do we sing the songs of other cultures? How does worship style impact hymnody and the role of the church musician?
